We all want joy. But what is joy and how do we get it?
Happiness, in contrast to joy, is a temporary state of being primarily based on external circumstances. I am happy when I'm cuddled up next to my purring cats, when I'm floating in the ocean, and when I'm surrounded by my husband and children. Joy, on the other hand, is a deeper, long-lasting sense of peace and contentment. It's an inner state of being where, even if the world around us is falling apart, we are certain of who we are and we are convicted that all will be okay.
The first step to achieving joy is believing that joy is possible in the first place. Once we believe joy is achievable, we have to take an honest look at our lives to find out what we are filling ourselves up with that is preventing joy from getting in.
What is keeping you from letting joy in? What things do you need to let go of to make room for joy in your life?
You might be tempted to think of things in your physical environment, like the clutter in your home, indulging on food, drugs or alcohol, or the toxic relationships in your life. As important as it is to take inventory of our physical environment, it is equally important to take stock of our inner world. Perhaps we need to let go of comparing ourselves to others, making excuses, negative self-talk, or giving into temptations.
Whatever it might be that is keeping you from joy, know that joy is possible and that there is room for joy in you life. If you're struggling to find joy in your life, contact one of our counselors to discover how you can make room for joy today.
